New Year's Eve

I am not for one to party in a big crowd, celebrations in a drunken stupor and loud shouting.
I am more for the quiet place with selected cherished friends, exotic location, kind of guy.
New Year's Eve was celebrated away from any noise, but the one of wind, cascading water and my little gas stove.

I had no idea when midnight struck as I was sound asleep.

Ready for dinner

As the light starts to soften and the day comes to an end, there is more time to relax around camp.
The shelter is ready and dinner will be started soon.

Big boulders

Dwarfed by the sheer size of the boulders the tree looks like a bonsai.

Moonless at the rock

We wanted to see the sunset from a high point, right on top of the large granite boulders, and then decided to actually camp there too.
The moon was going to rise late and the stars created again a perfect backdrop for our stage.

There was not enough light from the stars to illuminate the large boulders so a headlamp helped create this photograph, painting the rock while (long) exposing the image.

The granite belt

Running along the spine of Australia's East Coast is the Granite Belt.
The bare giant boulders allow for distant vistas particularly enchanting at sunset.

There is something about the granite rocky landscape, the smooth surreal surfaces and the grandiose scale of it all. Around the world I have always been drawn to this type of landscape; the High Sierra in California and the Scandinavian Baltic Coast my other special places.

Pure gold

Even the imperceptible power of water can shape pure granite, given enough time.
As it carved through thousands of years it changed its course and today it flows in a chamber much lower, leaving behind the leather-like smooth rock.
Sunlight bounces around making it appear as pure gold.

Boulder hopping

Endless hours can be spent exploring the granite shores polished by the glacial action.
High above the shore large boulders lay in the crevices where only winter storm waves can reach them to tumble them.

Late sunset in Åland

After a day of rough seas, pulling into this little natural harbor was a real relief.
I called it the Japanese Garden, where ponds and low vegetation is arranged in almost a made-made form. The small gentle waves were only a reminder of the big seas earlier in the day.

The sun seemed to never set, just skirted to horizon, hiding behind the light clouds
We were tired and half asleep when the light outside the tent changed and started to glow.

The polished granite

Initially by glacier, then by waves of winter storms, the granite polished to an almost sensual level of smoothness.

Alfresco dining

No restaurant with fancy service can match the feeling that I get from preparing and enjoying a meal outside, with minimal utensils, away from civilization.

Granite boulders

Feeling like an ant among the giant granite boulders.
A place that I like to visit in winter where sleeping outside on a frosty night I can gaze at the clear sky with its endless stars.
